Hurl Nut Zippers

My sweet seven month old baby boy, who is very sweet and happy and always sweet, is not content to stay in the living room with his toys anymore. He's got an adventuresome spirit! There are so many things in this house that need tasting.

Tasty items include:

The cat's food and water
The cat himself
The costume Mommy is sewing
Newspapers
The vacuum cleaner
Disney videos
Shoes
and...Diapers

I'd allow the baby to gulp down the cat but I know how the cat struggles with hairballs. I would never toss my baby outside when he starts horkin' up a wad of stinky fur.

What time is it? No, it's not Howdy Doody time. It's the fifteenth and it's January's Bestest Housewifely Doodad time!

After a lot of soul searching this month I finally came upon an item that makes my mornings run smoothly. It's not coffee, though coffee makes my colon run smoothly. It's...

Snack sized Ziploc bags! Packing lunches for school aged carpet apes was never so snack-a-riffic. The size is perfect for lunch boxes! Throw a few baby carrots in these suckers and you've provided your progeny with a balanced and nutritious alternative to the microwave heated two dollar a lunch crap they serve at the elementary school.

(A sidenote...the school actually serves those damned peanut butter and jelly Uncrustables. Seriously...a PB+J convenience food? Who can't slap together a real PB+J? The Smuckers folks are off their rockers.)

I don't want to mislead you, dear readers and other hangers on. I don't buy Ziploc brand. Frankly, the above was the only good photo of the product I could find on the internets. I buy the store brand. In bulk. I'm not overly picky over the thickness of the plastic, or the colors of the zipper mechanism...especially over something that's just going to be thrown away. I go cheap. All I ask is that it keeps a handful of raisins squishy for four stinkin' hours and that ants can't get in.

These bags are available at any grocery type store anywhere. If they are not available near you I think you should throw red paint on the bagboys. That'll get the point across!

Thank you snack sized zipper bags, I like you, I really like you.

  1. Becky-Just came on over from my blog where you posted. Thanks for the inspiration, it was after posting with you about this on About.com and seeing your site that I decided to go for it.

For the diaper crowd, you can buy some nice little reuseable snack sized tupperware things at the dollar store. (easier for pudgy little hands to get into and not as crushable-I tend to forget I have cheerios in the diaper bag and wind up with cheerio dust)

Also, I had a friend point out when I had dd4 that an empty parmesean cheese container with the label off (if you get the plastic ones with the screw on lids) is great for loading up with cheerios etc and keeping in the diaper bag for the little guys-then when you are out you can just pour out a handful for them to keep them busy.

Haven't had to do the lunchbox thing yet except for dh, and he's old enough that I can send tupperware in and actually get it back :)

  3. My daughter is almost 3 and she still puts stuff in her mouth. I have to be very careful with her at the grocery store. I will find her with her mouth on the cart. GROSS!

  7. I'm so with you about the snack sized zipper bags, I use those for carrots, goldfish etc also. If I could get offbrand here I would as they just get tossed at the end of the day.

I also find the snack size ziplock tubs great too (but she brings those home) for things like pudding and applesauce.

  9. Yes your baby is just adorable. Same age as my boy and he is also putting everything in his mouth. He has his 3rd tooth now and has done irreplaceable damage to the remote. He also tries to eat the dog. MMMM fur.

  10. The baby is adorable, man oh man. I too could careless about the name brand zip bags As long as they hold what I've put in from falling out. What more could one ask? lol

  11. Becky - I find the snack bags at Big Lots. I usually buy several boxes at a time so that I don't run out. What did we ever do in the days before plastic bags.

PS - The owner of that dry cleaners did not deserve to have a temple recommend.
